If your dog is overweight, then there is a high chance that they will experience more health problems at a later date. You may even find that they have less energy in the day and that they also struggle with day to day activities. If you want to help them, then there are plenty of things that you can do to shed those pounds.
Calculate the Calories
If you have no idea how many calories your dog needs every day, then you won’t know how much you need to feed them. Feeding guides tend to be based on un-neutered, or unspayed dogs. They are also based on adult dogs too, so if you have a neutered or spayed puppy then there is a high chance that you are overfeeding them. If you want to get some help here then chat with your vet and ask them to calculate how much food your dog needs every day. If you aren’t able to chat with your local vet, then multiply the weight of your pet by 2.2. When you have done this, times it by 30, and then add on 70. This number will be the average amount of calories that your dog needs, every day.
Measure your Meals
A lot of pet owners fill up their dog’s bowl and they guess how much they are feeding them too. To make things even worse, they top it up throughout the day. If you do this, then there is a high chance that you are overfeeding your pet. If you want to stop this from happening, then you need to use a measuring cup instead. When you do this, you will then be able to calculate how many calories your pet needs and you can also space out the portions throughout the day. Treats are essential if you are training your dog. There’s no way around it. Treats are a great motivator and it is certainly a language that your dog will understand. If you feed your dog too many treats however then this may cause them to become overweight and you may even find that they are more prone to heart disease. If you want to get around this then you need to choose treats that are low in fat and high in protein. This can include sweet potato, salmon or anything else similar. Remember also that dogs can’t do division. They won’t know that you have broken up the same treat into smaller parts, so don’t be afraid to do this so that you can make each treat go further.
Store-bought treats can be bad for your dog if you feed them on a daily basis. If you want to try and offer your dog better alternatives, consider opting for carrots, green beans, celery or even sliced apple. These are naturally nutritious, and they are also low in sugar, so they’re perfect if you want your pooch to lose a few pounds.
