Our hearing is a sense which we sometimes take for granted. During our younger years we turn up the music to full blast, we let our ears clog up and this can lead to hearing problems later on in our lives. If you want to maintain your hearing and healthy ears for longer in your life, here are some things you can do.


  1. Use earplugs

You would assume that it is common sense to wear earplugs around very loud noises, but a lot of people don’t take this precaution and they end up causing dangerous levels of sound in their ears. Unless you want to learn more about hearing aids very soon, you need to make sure that you look after your ears and protect them from loud noises at all costs.

2. Turn it down

Although we all know that having your favourite film or music on louder can make it feel more immersive and epic: it does a lot of damage to our ears. If you find yourself watching the TV at night with a volume of 30, try moving it down to 25 for a while and let your ears adjust to a lower sound. This not only gives your ears a break, but it can also train your ears to listen more closely which will allow you to hear more in your day to day life.

3. Silence

If you have been partying hard on a night out with your friends or out at a concert for the night, when you come home you need to relax and switch off. When your ears have been around a loud noise for a long period of time they will be strained, and the last thing you want to do is carry on causing stress to your ears. Instead, when you get home to enjoy the quiet serenity of Home and just enjoy the silence for a while. It will feel refreshing for you as well as your ears.

  1. Ditch the cotton buds

For decades and decades, it has been common practice for people to clean out their ears with cotton buds. This is something that everyone does and it is a habit which we all need to get out of. When you have some wax building up in your ears, the last thing you want to do is use a cotton bud because all it will do is push the wax further into your ear and block your eardrum. Instead, use a rinse of salt water, some olive oil, or even pop to your doctors office to see if they can help you in any way to clean it out.

  1. Take medication as directed

When you have a chronic health issue alongside trying to stay healthy and young, it can be a little difficult to avoid doing some damage to your hearing. Certain types of medication will actually inflame your ear which will make it difficult for you to hear a thing and this can mean that you suffer as a result. Make sure that when you take medication that you only take it as directed and no more than necessary. This can help you to avoid issues later down the line.

6. Keep your ears dry

There is nothing more annoying when you are in the shower than a stray drop of water entering your ear and you not being able to get it out again. However, you need to make sure that you try hard to dry your ears after a shower or when they are wet for your health and hearing. When there is water in your ears, there is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria, and bacteria can sometimes attack your ear canal and cause an infection. This can have a damaging effect on your ears and therefore you need to make sure that you keep them dry.

  1. Move around

Exercise is a huge part of a healthy body and it can have a really positive effect on every single part of the body, including your ears. When you exercise your body requires more oxygen and therefore your heart pumps blood around the body at a faster rate. Because of this, blood will flow through the ears and keep all of the components of the ear safe and sound. Your ears will thank you for it and they will stay healthier for longer. Next time you have a spare hour, get up and do some exercise and this will keep your body and your ears running happily for years to come.
